FKF demotes FIFA referee Erick Njogu after controversial Premier League decisions

Football Kenya Federation has demoted FIFA referee Erick Njogu to the National Super League and formally warned assistant referee Frederick Kajongo after reviewing recent FKF Premier League officiating.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has taken disciplinary action against two match officials following a performance review of recent Premier League fixtures, citing lapses in officiating standards.

The review was carried out by FKF's National Referees Committee on 10 December during a virtual meeting of the FKF Instructors Technical Group. It involved a detailed analysis of match footage, referees' reports, and explanations provided by the officials.

Following the assessment, FIFA referee Erick Njogu was demoted to a lower league after making several questionable decisions in two recent FKF Premier League matches.

"The Committee assessed the performance of Erick Njogu (FIFA Referee) in Match No. 56 (Kariobangi Sharks vs Shabana FC) and Match No. 94 (Nairobi United vs Mathare United). Several key decisions were found to be inconsistent with the standards expected at his level," said FKF in a statement.

"As a corrective and developmental measure, Njogu will be demoted to officiate National Super League (NSL) matches for the next five (5) rounds."

Closely monitored

FKF added that Njogu's performance in the National Super League will be closely monitored to determine when, or if, he is ready to return to Premier League duties.

The committee also reviewed the performance of assistant referee Frederick Kajongo, who was found responsible for an incorrect offside call in a previous Kenya Police vs Mathare United match. Kajongo has been issued a formal warning letter.

"The committee also reviewed the performance of Mr Fredrick Kajongo (Assistant Referee) in Match No. 90 (Kenya Police vs Mathare United). An incorrect offside decision was noted, and he has been issued with a formal written warning," said FKF.

"His future assignments will be closely monitored, with an expectation of improved decision-making."

According to FKF, these disciplinary actions form part of its ongoing referee development programme, aimed at promoting accountability, consistency, and high standards in officiating.
